Governors

Governors Roles and Responsibilities

Rev Jim McCartney

Chair of Governors

Wendy Parsons

Vice Chair of Governors

After an extensive career in the special education sector as a teacher and deputy head teacher, I recently retired. I have always loved learning, most recently gaining a master's degree in Senior Leadership in 2022; having worked with closely with governors in four schools, I am pleased to be able to continue to learn by offering my services to the governing body at St Anne’s. A recent convert to Catholicism, I am a parishioner at Sacred Heart church. I am an avid reader, enjoy yoga and Pilates, regularly go to the theatre and concerts, and spend much of my time with family and friends.

Lee Black

My name is Lee. My family arrived in England in the 1930s as Irish immigrants . I was raised very close to school and I attended Saint Anne’s school. I was married and my children were baptised at St Anne’s church.

Neena Khan

My name is Neena and I became a Parent Governor in 2025. I’m a very hands-on parent and passionate about my son's education, as well as the progress and wellbeing of all children in our school. I wanted to take on this role so I could be more involved, understand how decisions are made, and contribute to creating the best possible environment for our children to learn and grow. My background is in community support work, which has given me a strong understanding of the challenges families face and the importance of feeling heard and supported. I’m especially interested in children’s confidence, emotional wellbeing, and how we can strengthen the partnership between parents and the school. In my free time, I enjoy personal development, travelling, and spending quality time with my family.

Jonathan Berry

I am currently the Headteacher at Longshaw Community Junior School in Blackburn. I have been in education for over twenty years and am passionate about driving up standards for children from under-resourced backgrounds. I enjoy my role as a governor as it enables me to bring my experience and expertise in order to challenge and support the senior leadership team effectively. I am proud to be part of the governing body at St Anne's R.C. Primary School and felt very honoured to be asked to join the board. When I am away from school, I enjoy playing the guitar, listening to podcasts and visiting the gym to keep fit. I have four children and three grandchildren who bring me a great deal of joy and happiness. I sincerely hope my involvement results in the betterment of the children, staff and community at St Annes.

Tony Cross
My name is William Anthony (Tony) Cross and I have been  a foundation governor at St. Anne’s Primary school for several years. I was approached by Fr. Jim and invited to join the Governing body and, although it wasn’t something I’d previously considered, I gave it some thought and decided that if he saw something in me, then I would offer what services I had. I received a Catholic education, having been taught by nuns and priests as well as lay teaching staff at Sacred Heart Primary School and St. Mary’s College Grammar School for boys.
Following this, I attended journalism training and subsequently worked as a photographer for several groups of local and regional newspapers throughout the North West. My final position was on the weekly division of the Manchester Evening News. Since leaving full-time employment, I have continued to work occasionally on a freelance basis. This has included doing work for local and national companies,  and PR work for several local High Schools and an animal sanctuary. I also do some work for the Sacred Heart and St. Anne’s Parish.
I still attend Sacred Heart where I was baptised 70 years ago, taking an active part in the running of the church, including counting the weekly parish collection.I enjoy travelling, particularly to France where a couple of friends live and, of course, I always carry a camera with me!
George Crewe

I am a practising Catholic of the St Anne’s and Sacred Heart parish and a former pupil of St Anne’s Primary School. My career in education has included roles in classroom support, facilities and compliance management, and more recently, teaching Food and Nutrition at St Bede’s Secondary School. As a newly appointed foundation governor, I hope to use my experience to support the fantastic work already happening within the school community. I am also looking forward to learning from the staff, pupils, and families of St Anne’s and bringing those insights back into my own practice. In my free time, I enjoy staying active and spending time with my family and friends.

DBS checks for governors

From 18 March 2016, all school governors have been required to apply for an enhanced DBS (disclosure and barring service) check. The Government regulations specifically state:

  • By 1 September 2016, all maintained school governing bodies have to apply for an enhanced criminal records certificate for any serving governor who does not have one; and
  • From 1 April 2016, all newly appointed/elected governors or associate members ideally need to be checked as part of the recruitment process, or at the latest have applied for a check within 21 days of appointment (start of term of office).

We can confirm that all governors at St. Anne’s R.C. Primary School have had a DBS check.
