PE Days
In Year 1, we have PE on Monday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. Children are expected to wear full uniform to participate in PE lessons. If you are unsure which colour PE kit to purchase, please do not hesitate to speak to your child's class teacher to check which house they are in. For those of our children who wear earrings, we politely ask that they are removed for the duration of the sessions.
Homework Expectations
Homework expectations for year one are as follows:
Maths:
- Spend 5 minutes a day for 5 days per week (25 minutes per week) practising calculation skills using Numbots.
- Complete two, three-minute sessions per day, 5 days a week, on Numbots.
Reading:
- Read for 15 minutes at least three times a week, using a book allocated by Year 1 staff. Please ensure that you sign your child's reading record to indicate to staff they have read. They do not need to read the full book. Remember to ask them questions as the finish pages to assess their understanding.
- Engage with Reading Eggs daily.
Spellings:
- A set of spellings will be sent home weekly on a Monday to practise for the following week.
Year Group Messages
Welcome to the Year 1 class page! I hope you find everything you will need on our page.
We are so excited to begin this new chapter with your child. Year 1 marks a big step in your child’s learning journey — moving from the play-based approach of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to the more structured expectations of the National Curriculum with increased focus on reading, writing, and mathematics. Lessons become more structured, and children are encouraged to work more independently and develop stamina for longer learning tasks.
One of the biggest focuses in Year 1 is phonics — learning how letters and combinations of letters represent sounds. Phonics is the foundation of your child’s reading and writing skills. In the summer term, all Year 1 children take part in the Phonics Screening Check. This is a short assessment where each child reads 40 words — some real, some made-up “nonsense” words — to show how well they can apply their phonics knowledge. It helps us identify any areas where extra support might be needed.
To give your child the best chance of success, it is vital that they read every day at home. Regular reading helps reinforce their phonics learning, build fluency, and grow their confidence. Just 10–15 minutes a day makes a huge difference.
Thank you for your continued support. We’re looking forward to a fantastic year of learning and growing together. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
