At St Anne’s, we believe that every pupil is a unique creation made in the image of God, deserving of the best opportunities to develop their God-given talents. Oracy is the ability to express oneself clearly and confidently through spoken language. It is a vital skill that underpins pupils' academic success, personal development, and future life chances.
Research shows that strong oracy skills enhance learning, critical thinking, and engagement across all areas of the curriculum. They also build confidence, support social interaction, and prepare pupils for the challenges of further education, work, and community life. In particular, oracy supports pupils from diverse backgrounds, including those with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and Special Educational Needs (SEN), helping them to access the full curriculum and express their ideas effectively.
In line with our Catholic values of peace, tolerance, and fairness, we foster a school environment where pupils feel safe and encouraged to share their thoughts and listen respectfully to others. Developing oracy supports our vision of nurturing well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to society and live out Christ’s example of loving God and loving others.
To strengthen oracy across our school, we are embedding structured opportunities for speaking and listening in all subjects, enhancing our curriculum with targeted oracy strategies, and providing training for staff to deliver high-quality spoken language teaching. This commitment ensures that every pupil at St Anne’s has the confidence and skills to communicate effectively, unlocking their potential and giving them hope for a brighter tomorrow.
