In Year 1, we have PE on Monday mornings and Tuesday afternoons. Children are expected to wear full uniform to participate in PE lessons. If you are unsure which colour to purchase for your child, please do not hesitate to ask their class teacher which house they are in. For those of our children who wear earrings, we politely ask that they are removed for the duration of the sessions. 

Homework Expectations

Homework expectations for year one are as follows:

  • Spend 5 minutes a day for 5 days per week (25 minutes per week) practising calculation skills using Numbots.
  • Read for 15 minutes at least three times a week, using a book allocated by Year 1 staff. Please ensure that you sign your child's reading record to indicate to staff they have read. They do not need to read the full book. Remember to ask them questions as the finish pages to assess their understanding.
  • Complete two, three-minute garage sessions per day, 5 days a week, on Numbots.
  • Spellings will be send out and tested each following Monday.

Year Group Messages

Year 1 is an exciting time of change as children move from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) into Key Stage 1. This is a big transition for children and so, to support this, we begin the year with a blend of enhanced provision and whole-class learning. This helps the class to gradually adjust to expectations of the National Curriculum. By Christmas, most children are confidently engaging in full formal learning across all subjects. A key focus in Year 1 is phonics, which underpins early reading and writing skills. Children are prepared for the national Phonics Screening Check, which they will complete in the summer term—a short, one-to-one assessment where they read both real and ‘alien’ (nonsense) words to check their phonics knowledge. To give your child the best chance of success, regular engagement with home reading and weekly spellings is essential. Your support at home really does make a big difference!
