At St Annes, we are committed to fostering a lifelong love of writing among our pupils. Our intent is to develop confident, expressive, and skilled writers who can effectively communicate their thoughts and ideas in various forms and for diverse audiences. We aim to cultivate a rich writing culture that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression, aligned with the National Curriculum requirements. Specifically, we intend for our pupils to:

  • Engage with a wide range of genres: Expose pupils to fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and other forms, ensuring that they understand the various purposes and audiences for writing.

  • Develop technical proficiency: Equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to use grammar, punctuation, and spelling accurately, allowing them to compose coherent and polished pieces.

  • Foster creativity and voice: Encourage pupils to develop their unique voice through imaginative play and storytelling, enhancing their confidence in crafting original narratives.

  • Promote collaborative writing experiences: Facilitate opportunities for peer collaboration, enabling pupils to share feedback and ideas, thus enhancing their understanding of the writing process.

To support the National Curriculum for English, we follow Pathways to Write, which is a text-based approach for writing sessions. The programme focusses on mastering the English skills and allowing children to embed the skills needed to be not only confident, but creative writers.
